Goodbye to you, boss

January 31st, 2008 · 88 Comments

I said goodbye to my former boss today. This is the guy whom I’d known for 12 years and got me into this mess of a job here. Let’s just say that not a lot of tears were shed. There were about 10 of us at the table  for his Goodbye Lunch, 9 of us [...]

Another Day of Disappearing People

January 24th, 2008 · 8 Comments

Another day, another person gone. Our Line Manager announced that this was his last day and will soon be on his way to Dubai (like tomorrow I suspect. Get outta Dodge cowboy!). There’s a small drinking party for him in the bar below our office, managers invited I guess. Since this is Brazil, that means [...]

So, what IS IT with this company?

January 23rd, 2008 · 52 Comments

Yes, yes, that’s right. It’s been a full 3 months since I last had to reapply for my job, so I guess it’s that time again. 3000 people let go, all jobs (again) officially empty and everyone has to apply. I watched a video from our esteemed CEO the other day and was quite amused [...]

Singapore

January 14th, 2008 · 4 Comments

6 minutes to go on my one Singapore dollar at this internet station. Short entry. Arrived at the brand-spankin’ new Terminal 3, opened a week ago. Beautiful and clean, like much of the rest of Singapore. We left most of our bags at the left baggage place to travel light. Headed for the train. Walked [...]

Indonesia – Day 15

January 13th, 2008 · 18 Comments

Today was our last day here. So, we celebrated by going to the mall. (–insert sarcasm here–) We actually needed to go to get a few last-minute things done. The wife grew her hair long to show it to everyone here (it really was nicely-grown), and so since everyone had seen it she cut most of [...]

Indonesia – Day 14

January 12th, 2008 · 9 Comments

Today we decided to go to the big department store that we had gone to so many numerous times in the past when we lived here, Pasa Raya. Most of the clothing that I’d bought, most of the souvenirs, just about everything from Indonesia came form this store. Since it has everything, why go anywhere else? Pasa [...]

Indonesia – Day 13

January 11th, 2008 · 96 Comments

Another stay-at-home day today. Well, actually, we did go to the mall, a different one this time, as the wife wanted to look for some CD’s, DVD’s and to shop for all of those spices and things that she needs to cook Indonesian food. We packed up on pounds and pounds of that stuff! I [...]

Indonesia – Day 12

January 10th, 2008 · 76 Comments

A stay-at-home day today. That meant that I finished reading another book (my third here), surfed around the internet and spent a few well-timed moments outdoors, i.e. when the coulds were covering the sun and after the sun went down. The first week that we were here saw daily rain, all morning, all night, so there was little that one would want to do outside. But now the weather has returned to its normal very hot, very sticky oppressive self and I find myself sticking to the secure comforts of an air-conditioned room, though the air conditioner is showing signs of stress. When I went outside today, it was usually to look and see what the kid and/or wife were doing. With the wife, it was usually finding here sitting on a bamboo bench somewhere, flicking the ants off of her legs and swatting away the flies and trading last year’s gossip with her relatives. With the kid I simply had to listen for the screams [...]

Indonesia – Day 11

January 9th, 2008 · 101 Comments

I went in to the office today. You’re probably thinking ”What??” Why would I do seomting as crazy as that during my vacation? At least that’s what I was thinking anyway. Well, the trouble with taking so long of a vacation is that there is a certain amount of guilt that goes with it.  So, as a footnote to my request for a long vacation with my boss, I mentioned that I would spend a couple of days in the office catching up on things, and so I [...]

Indonesia – Day 10

January 8th, 2008 · No Comments

Today was a stay-at-home-do-nothing sort of day. That is about what we did. I played some badminton with the kid and the brother-in-law, just hitting the shuttlecock around. A group of performers with a monkey came around and gave a little show. The boys played a little homemade gamelan set while the monkey strutted around playing with props. Was fun to watch not only them but also the throng of kids following them around the neighborhood. I took a video which I’ll post [...]

Indonesia – Day 9

January 7th, 2008 · 8 Comments

We went to the local mall again so that I cold pick up my new glasses. They were both nicely done at a good price – most impressive. The kid go to play again in the indoor playground for an hour. He loves that place. We shopped around in the department store, just looking around, and I came out a couple hundred dollars poorer but with some nice shirts to show for it, including some Polo, which are licensed very cheaply here in Indonesia. Went back to the house and lounged around again. There truly [...]

Indonesia – Day 8

January 5th, 2008 · 9 Comments

We packed up early after breakfast and headed into Bandung proper. The wife wanted to look at shoes as this was the cobbler center of Indonesia at one point (the point before the Chinese built huge factories and took away all of the business).  But, as we got there, we could see that it had [...]

Indonesia – Day 7

January 4th, 2008 · 1 Comment

We woke up early (as always here) and headed off to Kawah Putih. I didn’t know what the heck this place was supposed to be as I didn’t know what the word “kawah” meant, although I knew tht “putih” meant “white”. So, we were going off to a white something-or-other. I went along for the ride. We drove for about 30 min.  up and up the mountain and finally parked near the top which was freezing cold! This was by far the coldest most of the people there had ever experienced and it showed. They were huddled together, arms crossed, teeth grit together in a solid mass of shivering numbness.  I told them that when we lived in Copenhagen, this was about the [...]

Indonesia – Day 6

January 3rd, 2008 · 8 Comments

The drivers showed up at around 730 am to take all of the families for a few days in the cool mountains of the Bandung area. I was amazed to see that all 4 families, with children and a maid with drivers all fit into 2 cars. It was a tight fit, but everyone knew [...]

Indonesia – Day 5

January 2nd, 2008 · 5 Comments

Hung around all late-morning and some of early afternoon for the taxi that we ordered for late morning. It took 2.5 hours for a taxi that never arrived. So, we just hung out on the street and got the first taxi that we saw that was empty. I don’t know why we didn’t do that [...]

Indonesia – Day 4

January 1st, 2008 · 33 Comments

Nothing much happened today.  It rained all day, so I didn’t venture outside at all, other than to take a look at the catch of fish that the brother-in-law caught from the fish ponds below the house. Some small-sized carp that are nonetheless good eating. The kid played all day, and I mean ALL DAY [...]
